Q1. What brought you to our affiliate?
After years of traditional self directed training, my progress was waning and working out became stale. I was also starting to note an increased injury rate and overall loss of strength and work capacity regardless of programing or intensity. I was in the best “shape” of my life at 10% body fat but I wasn’t “fit” and seemed to be getting worse the harder I tried. I have friends who are cross fitters and I was shocked by their lifting and “work” capacity compared to the size and musculature that they maintained. Driving by each day I would watch workouts being done in the box and finally decided it was time to check it out.
Q2. Please describe your experience at CrossFit Cochrane. How does it differ from your initial expectations when you joined CrossFit Chochrane?
Lesson 1 – Check the ego at the door. Crossfit is humbling, each and every day. The programming is uniquely suited to developing work capacity, regardless of the scaling of exercises. Resultantly, my level of “fitness” and confidence in movement and sport far exceeds what my expectations were. The lagging aches and pains also went away as soon as core strength started to develop. Competition exists in a supportive capacity, and the coaching provides tools to safely expand my personal achievements. Collapsing in my own puddle of sweat has become a badge of honour.
Q3. What advice would you give to someone thinking of trying CrossFit, and joining CrossFit Cochrane?
All people will see results if the desire and drive exists. Goals are set and broken in less than 20 minute intervals and the related emotion that comes from finishing any of the programming, such as RX’ing a chipper or setting a PB lift is uniquely satisfying. Crossfit does not injure people, any exercise executed improperly causes injury regardless of intensity, training or purpose. What Crossfit provides is motivation, training and support for each individual to explore fitness achievement. The coaching capacity and unique functional core strength movements at the root of Crossfit have helped me quickly address lagging weaknesses and has been highly beneficial in strengthening and building confidence around working within and developing my natural parameters and historic injuries. Stop the endless treadmill miles; do a 20 minute WOD and see how much “easier” life gets.
