Q1. What brought you to our affiliate?

After years of traditional self directed training, my progress was waning and working out became stale. I was also starting to note an increased injury rate and overall loss of strength and work capacity regardless of programing or intensity. I was in the best “shape” of my life at 10% body fat but I wasn’t “fit” and seemed to be getting worse the harder I tried. I have friends who are cross fitters and I was shocked by their lifting and “work” capacity compared to the size and musculature that they maintained. Driving by each day I would watch workouts being done in the box and finally decided it was time to check it out.

Q2. Please describe your experience at CrossFit Cochrane. How does it differ from your initial expectations when you joined CrossFit Chochrane?

Lesson 1 – Check the ego at the door. Crossfit is humbling, each and every day. The programming is uniquely suited to developing work capacity, regardless of the scaling of exercises. Resultantly, my level of “fitness” and confidence in movement and sport far exceeds what my expectations were. The lagging aches and pains also went away as soon as core strength started to develop. Competition exists in a supportive capacity, and the coaching provides tools to safely expand my personal achievements. Collapsing in my own puddle of sweat has become a badge of honour.

Q3. What advice would you give to someone thinking of trying CrossFit, and joining CrossFit Cochrane?

All people will see results if the desire and drive exists. Goals are set and broken in less than 20 minute intervals and the related emotion that comes from finishing any of the programming, such as RX’ing a chipper or setting a PB lift is uniquely satisfying. Crossfit does not injure people, any exercise executed improperly causes injury regardless of intensity, training or purpose. What Crossfit provides is motivation, training and support for each individual to explore fitness achievement. The coaching capacity and unique functional core strength movements at the root of Crossfit have helped me quickly address lagging weaknesses and has been highly beneficial in strengthening and building confidence around working within and developing my natural parameters and historic injuries. Stop the endless treadmill miles; do a 20 minute WOD and see how much “easier” life gets.

My introduction and experience at CrossFit Cochrane have exceeded any expectation that I had. The workouts are always new and challenging, combine with great coaching and the encouragement from fellow members, I always leave wanting to come back for another class.

Thank you to Joe for bringing CrossFit to Cochrane, I am happy to be a member and a part of the CrossFit community!

I have worked out at the gym consistently for years and years. I was so bored and just couldn’t push myself, so I decided to try Crossfit Cochrane. I went to my fist class worried since I’ve heard these workouts are so different than what I was used to. Not once did I feel like my inexperience was a burden to Coach Joe and the others working out. It was quite the opposite. Everyone was encouraging and helpful. I’ve gone from dreading my workouts to absolutely loving them and when I see a workout that looks challenging instead of running from it, I sign up for that class. I love it so much that although there are other boxes a lot closer to me, I drive the extra miles for coach Joe and the community Crossfit Cochrane provides.

CrossFit Cochrane is great for any level of fitness, from beginner to advanced you can benefit from the workouts. Previously, I have always worked out alone so working out within a community is a huge shift; it really motivates you and pushes you outside of your comfort zone, and keeps you accountable. Plus it’s just fun to be with awesome people, it becomes a community more so than just a place to workout. The progress and gains I have made since November have been unparalleled with anything I have done in the past. You never peak, there is always something new and challenging in store!

It has been close to 100 days since I have come to back to Crossfit. If you had talked to me 110 days ago, I would have told you that I would be happy to get a little stronger and to increase my fitness but I will never run again. I will never be able to really challenge myself in any leg exercise due to serious knee pain, and I hope to be able to reduce my waistline and to meet new people in a town where I am a stranger.
After the workout today (and a solid lunch filled with good protein), I have been reflecting and happened to notice how much stronger my frame feels. I am amazed how I feel. Even more important, my left knee feels like a brand new joint. I have finally been able to move past the fear that I have held in this joint since basically destroying it in the summer of 1993.
I would like to give the credit to Crossfit, but that would not be honest. The real reason I feel so good is I have finally found a facility run by great people who train great people. Every facility I have tried to join were run by ego driven meatheads who sneer at you and surround themselves with people who measure you by physical skills. They created an atmosphere where I always felt inferior. Maybe its being a new resident in a new country that made me a bit sensitive to it, but, the environment was not friendly.
What has made it easy to show up on a consistent basis because of the atmosphere you and Carol have created. I enjoy everyone at the gym who I get to share my time with and am excited to get there as I am constantly inspired by the people who I find at the gym. The more I see the Lucia’s, the Holly’s, the Jennifer’s alongside the Mike’s, Colin’s, Brandon’s, Jevin’s, and Les’s (not meaning to leave anyone out) of the gym, the more I love the time I spend there. Everyone there is looking to be a better version of themselves.
I am excited to see how I feel after the next 100 days.
